Its speaker count has more than tripled since 2016.
Sorell, Tasmania
In Sorell, the 2021 Census counted 3.1 per cent of residents speaking a language other than English at home, led by Nepali and Mandarin. Sorell's share is well under the share for Hobart. That number was well over a fifth lower in 2016.
Nepali has the most speakers, though every group here is small.
Across Tasmania, the share speaking another language is more than double. In Tasmania, 14 councils rank above Sorell.
Same method throughout, so the gap between the bars is the real gap.
Sorell tops the list, but the spread across 14 suburbs is narrow.
Suburb pages list every language counted in that suburb.
Data: ABS Census of Population and Housing 2021, language used at home, summed from Statistical Area Level 2 to council. Changes are against the 2016 Census.
A note on method: 976 residents didn't state a language, and this page doesn't count them as speaking one. That's why 3.1% sits below the 8.9% you'd get by counting every blank, and below 3.3% measured across respondents only.
People with no usual address fall outside any suburb, which is why the national figure here is a fraction under the ABS one. The council figures aren't affected.
