ISO certified translation

ISO certification is independent confirmation that a management system, process or service meets the requirements of a published ISO standard. ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, is a non-governmental body that develops the standards; it does not certify anyone against them. Certification is granted by an accredited certification body after an audit, and kept through regular surveillance audits.

Because it replaces a claim with a record. Any provider can say it has quality and security processes. A certified provider has had those processes audited by an independent body against a published standard, and is re-audited to keep the certificate. For a buyer, that means consistent delivery, secure handling of sensitive material, and a documented process to fall back on when something goes wrong.

ISO 17100 is the international standard for translation services. It specifies requirements for every part of the process that affects the quality and delivery of a translation: the qualifications and competence of translators and revisers, project management, the production process from enquiry to delivery, and the handling of feedback. Its best-known requirement is that every translation is revised by a second qualified linguist.

It means your project is handled by qualified professionals under a defined process. The translator meets the standard’s competence requirements and has expertise in your subject area, a second linguist revises the full translation against the source, and a project manager is accountable for the specification and the delivery. The result is accuracy, consistency and confidentiality that do not depend on who happens to be working that day.

ISO 27001 certification confirms that LEXIGO runs an audited information security management system. For clients who trust us with confidential or personal material, it means the risks to that material have been assessed and controlled: files are encrypted in transit and at rest, access is limited to the project team, and the controls are tested through internal and external audits. It is the standard most often named in government and enterprise security requirements.

No. NAATI certification is held by an individual translator and is what makes a translation of a personal document accepted by an Australian government department. ISO 17100 is held by the organisation and governs the process the translation is produced under. For a birth certificate or a visa application you need a NAATI certified translation. For a program of work, a tender or a security-sensitive project, you usually need a provider that holds ISO certification as well. LEXIGO holds both, and is also a NAATI Endorsed language service provider (LSP950085).

Through internal audits, staff training against the requirements of each standard, and a continual improvement process that acts on audit findings and client feedback. An accredited certification body then conducts surveillance audits each year and a full recertification audit every three years. A certificate lapses if the audits are not passed, which is what makes it worth checking.
