Mandarin
59 speakers
Used at home by fewer than one in 100 residents.
Ararat, Victoria
Ararat is overwhelmingly English-speaking: at the 2021 Census, about 470 people used another language at home, most often Mandarin. Across Victoria, the share speaking another language is more than double. It's a community that grew fast between the last two censuses.
Mandarin leads a short list of small communities.
The share nationally is at least twice Ararat's. 27 councils in Victoria have a lower share.
Residents speaking a language other than English at home, as a share of all residents.
Suburb pages list every language counted in that suburb.
ABS Census of Population and Housing, 2021: language used at home, by Statistical Area Level 2, rolled up to Local Government Area. Change is measured from 2016.
A note on method: 1,462 residents didn't state a language, and this page doesn't count them as speaking one. That's why 4.0% sits below the 16.2% you'd get by counting every blank, and below 4.5% measured across respondents only.
Two caveats: summing suburbs leaves out residents with no usual address, so national totals land a little under ABS published figures, and ranked lists leave out broad ABS categories that don't name a language.
