NAATI Certified Translation FAQ

Common questions and answers to NAATI certified translators and NAATI translation services.

What is NAATI?

The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd (NAATI) is the national standards and certification body for translators and interpreters in Australia.

NAATI's mission, as outlined in the NAATI Constitution, is to "set and maintain high national standards in translating and interpreting to enable the existence of a pool of certified translators and interpreters responsive to the changing needs and demography of the Australian community."

The core focus of NAATI is issuing credentials — known as certifications (formerly known as accreditations) — for professionals who wish to work as translators and interpreters in Australia.

What is a NAATI-certified translation?

In Australia, foreign documents not written in English must be accompanied by a NAATI-certified translation for certain administrative procedures, or to guarantee access to certain rights and services.
This includes legal documents like birth certificates, marriage certificates, school certificates, and legal contracts — as well as export-related documents like user guides, certificates of origin, and dangerous goods certificates.

Government authorities including the Department of Home Affairs, the judiciary, and customs will require a certified NAATI translation for you to conduct any official business in Australia when you have a non-English document.

NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) is the sole body in Australia that issues certification for translators, as required by Australia's professional translation standards.

Why do I need a NAATI-certified translator?

A NAATI-certified translator must not only be fluent in one or more foreign languages, but also demonstrate mastery of the target language. To prove their skills and aptitude for translation, they must sit and pass a NAATI certification test and, once certified, continue to meet ongoing professional development requirements.

For this reason, nearly all government departments and official bodies only accept translations completed by NAATI-certified translators. LEXIGO's NAATI translators for personal document requirements are experienced migration translators and legal translators who handle hundreds of certified documents each month.

Why are NAATI translations important?

A certified NAATI translation is accompanied by the translator's official NAATI stamp, confirming that the translation is true, accurate, and in conformity with the original document. In some cases, a signed statement attesting to accuracy and completeness is also included.

As stated on the official NAATI website: "NAATI assesses translation and interpreting professionals against these standards so that English and non-English speakers can interact effectively with each other, particularly when accessing medical, government and other services."

How long does a NAATI translation take?

Turnaround depends on the service level you choose:

• NAATI Essential: 3–5 business days (electronic delivery only)
• NAATI Economy: 1–3 business days (includes 2 hard copies via regular post)
• NAATI Express:1–48 business hours (includes 2 hard copies via regular post)

Most standard personal documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and driver's licences, are completed well within these timeframes. Delivery times do not include postage times for hard copies.

What is the difference between an extract translation and a full translation?

An extract translation captures the essential information from your document — names, dates, key details — and is suitable for most personal documents and certificates such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and driver's licences. This is the most common and cost-effective option for immigration, visa, and government applications.

A full translation is a complete, word-for-word translation of the entire document, including all text, annotations, and formatting. Full translations are typically required for more complex documents such as legal contracts, court orders, or multi-page academic transcripts.

Both extract and full translations are completed by NAATI-certified translators and carry the official NAATI stamp for acceptance by all Australian government departments.

Do I need the original document, or can I submit a photo or scan?

You don't need to send your original documents. Simply take a clear photo with your smartphone or scan your document and submit it online. We accept documents in PDF, JPEG, and PNG formats.

For best results, make sure the entire document is visible, the text is legible, and the image is well-lit without glare or shadows. A clear submission helps us deliver your translation faster.

Which government departments accept LEXIGO translations?

All of them. LEXIGO's NAATI-certified translations are accepted by every Australian government department and authority, including:

- Department of Home Affairs (immigration and visas)
- Australian Passport Office
- Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
- Centrelink / Services Australia
- Australian Taxation Office (ATO)
- Medicare
- Australian courts and tribunals
- Australian universities and educational institutions
- VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online)
- State transport authorities (VicRoads, Transport for NSW, TMR, etc.)

We guarantee acceptance, or your money back.

Please note (NSW driver's licences): If you are translating a driver's licence to apply for an Australian driver's licence in New South Wales, the translation must be completed via Transport for NSW (formerly RMS) — LEXIGO is unable to translate driver's licences for this specific purpose. If you are translating a driver's licence for the purpose of driving as an international visitor in NSW, or for any purpose in any other state, LEXIGO can assist and our translation is guaranteed for acceptance.

Why is LEXIGO's NAATI translation pricing generally lower than other providers?

We're always looking for ways to save on time and costs through our own smart technology, and pass those savings on to our customers.

Unlike traditional translation agencies, LEXIGO provides translations faster and at scale by eliminating common manual processes involved in certified translations that you would usually pay a premium for.

The same technology trusted by over 50 government departments is now available for personal document translations  at prices built for individuals.

Why do some languages cost more than others?

Approximately 90% of the languages we offer are at the standard rates quoted on this page. However, some rarer languages can attract higher fees.

Several factors affect the cost of NAATI translation from language to language. For example, some languages have an extremely limited number of NAATI-certified translators available and are in high demand. Another factor is that some languages have a higher proportion of translators certified at the Advanced level, a higher certification level than the standard Professional level, which costs more.

If your language attracts a different rate, we'll let you know when you submit your document for a quote.

Will my NAATI-translated document be accepted?

Yes. Your NAATI-certified translation will be accepted by all Australian government departments and bodies. Guaranteed.

LEXIGO provides NAATI-certified translation services not only for individuals, but also for Australian government departments themselves. All translations are completed by professionally certified NAATI translators and include the official NAATI stamp.

We guarantee your translation will be accepted by the relevant department, or your money back.

How does the LEXIGO acceptance guarantee work?

You will receive a full refund if: an Australian government department requires a NAATI-certified translation, you have your document translated by LEXIGO, and the translation is not accepted.

In the unlikely event your translation is not accepted, LEXIGO will first speak directly to the relevant government department to understand why and attempt to make any necessary amendments. If the translation is still not accepted after this process, LEXIGO will refund your purchase in full.

How can I pay for my NAATI translation?

You can pay securely online via credit card. We accept all major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Payment is processed in a secure, ISO 27001-certified environment with SSL AES-256 encryption.

Does Australia Post accept translations completed by LEXIGO?

Yes. Australia Post acts on behalf of the government to process certain applications — such as passports for the Australian Passport Office. Their role is to receive and forward applications, not to assess the validity of accompanying documentation such as NAATI-certified translations.

The processing of your application and all accompanying documentation is assessed by the relevant government authority, which accepts LEXIGO's NAATI-certified translations.

Which parts of Australia do you service?

LEXIGO provides NAATI-certified translation services Australia-wide, covering all major cities and regional areas including Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, and Hobart.

Electronic copies are delivered via secure link to any location. Hard copies (where included in your chosen package) are posted to any Australian address via Australia Post. Express Post and courier options are also available.

What is the difference between NAATI certification and NAATI recognition?

In Australia, there are high-volume and low-volume languages, defined by the size and demand of their respective communities.

For new and emerging language communities in Australia, NAATI certification testing may not yet be available. In these cases, NAATI 'recognises' the language and provides practitioners with NAATI recognition rather than formal certification.

Both NAATI-certified and NAATI-recognised translations are accepted for official use by Australian government departments. If NAATI certification is not available for your language, LEXIGO will supply a NAATI-recognised translation and advise you accordingly.
