Enhancing Accessibility and Understanding in Diverse Communities for IBAC

Challenge

The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) in Victoria plays a pivotal role in preventing corrupt conduct and police misconduct in the public sector. With jurisdiction across various public entities in Victoria, IBAC must effectively communicate with a diverse audience, including culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) Victorians.

The challenge was to produce and translate essential informational videos that explain IBAC’s role and processes in reporting police misconduct, ensuring accessibility and understanding for non-English speaking communities.

Solution

LEXIGO was engaged to translate two critical IBAC videos into 21 languages, including Arabic, Greek, Vietnamese, and Hindi. These videos, one detailing IBAC’s police oversight role and the other reporting on police misconduct, were crucial in educating the community about IBAC’s functions.

Our solution involved a comprehensive process that ensured accuracy and cultural relevance in each language. This process included a meticulous quality assurance check by native speakers who were not the original translators and a reverse translation of the video captions.

LEXIGO also incorporated two correction rounds to guarantee the final product’s highest quality. We ensured the translations were compatible with various formats, including closed captions for videos. We integrated burnt-in subtitles for languages incompatible with closed captions, such as Sinhalese.

Our team also conducted a thorough quality assurance check on implementing these translated resources on IBAC’s website and YouTube channel.

Impact

LEXIGO’s engagement with IBAC led to several key impacts:

  1. Quality and Timeliness: Our project management ensured that all tasks and deliverables met IBAC’s high standards for quality and timeliness.
  2. Comprehensive Quality Assurance: Our rigorous quality assurance and remediation process ensured the translations were culturally appropriate and accurate.
  3. Meeting Key Delivery Dates: We successfully met all key delivery dates and milestones, reflecting our commitment to project timelines.
  4. Accessibility and Engagement: The translated videos, delivered in various requested formats, made critical information accessible to a broad, linguistically diverse audience, enhancing community engagement and understanding of IBAC’s role.
